Cyprus Bonsai Society - Home | FacebookLog inHinoki cypress The ciprés hinoki is really a "false" cypress (while the Cupressus genre is the "real" cypress. It is an evergreen coniferous tree native to Taiwan and southern Japan. The hinoki cypress can grow up to 40 meters (130 feet) tall and the trunk can reach a diameter of 3 meters (10ft). The scale leaves are dark green and form flat frosts. The bark is reddish brown and gets into strips. The ciprés hinoki is a monoclinic plant that produces globular cones that contain small winged seeds. As bonsai, this species needs constant maintenance of foliage, because if the trees are not frequently pruned the lower and inner branches will not get enough sunlight and die. There are some dwarf growers that are very suitable for small bonsai, such as Yatsubusa, Chirimen and Sekka, with very small and compact foliage. Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Nana gracilis' is a beautiful dwarf ornamental tree but quite difficult for bonsai as it does not spring from old wood. It is usually grafted and rootstock often produces an ugly swelling at the base of the trunk. If you need help identifying your tree, try our guide. Bonsai specific care guides for Hinoki Cypress Bonsai TreePlacement: The ciprés hinoki needs a place in full sun during the growing season. In winter it also needs a lot of light. Protects the trees against frosts and frozen winds. Water: Regar the ciprés hinoki as soon as the soil drys, but do not keep the roots soaked wet all the time. Use lemon-free water. In winter water less but never let rootball dry completely. The foliage likes moisture and can suffer when exposed to the hot dry wind. Fertilization: Apply solid organic fertilizer every four weeks or use a liquid fertilizer every week during the crop season. Pruning and wiring: The foliage must be cut regularly in order to remove the excess and overlap of the shoots in the form of a fan that shade the inner and lower branches. If the inner leaves are not exposed to sufficient sunlight, they will die and will not go back. The branches of the hinoki bonsai take some time to keep their positions wired. It will be necessary to relive them several times. The style can be done at any time of the year. Repotting: Replenish the hinoki cypress every two to four years, very old specimens can wait even longer. The roots grow quickly and can be considerably pruned. Use a well removed soil mixture, but in hot weather add a little more humus for water retention. Hinoki ciprés does not like lime and prefers slightly acid soil. Propagation: Chamaecyparis can spread from seed cuts, soft wood and air transport. Seeds need cold pretreatment and can take a year to germinate. Soft wood cuts are better taken at the end of summer. Bonsai in Cyprus I was recently the guest of some great boys behind the Bonsai Cyprus Forum. We met last year when everyone visited our nursery for a couple of days. I was pleased to receive an invitation to visit her. Because of the pressure in my time I could only handle a short visit this time. Working with Stavros, Greg and Savvas reminded me when I started my bonsai trip 20 years ago. So much enthusiasm and so much excitement is great to be around. I felt like being around a lot of kids, these guys have a lot of energy... and so many questions... And many plants too! That's just what it takes to succeed with bonsai and these guys will go all the way safe. I'm surprised the bonsai doesn't seem to have more than one follower in Cyprus. However, here my friends the word is sure to extend and I am very happy to be able to help in a small way.
